Stretch and Care
Stretch and Care connects two important dimensions of human performance: the challenge required for people and teams to develop, and the support and conditions that help them engage with that challenge sustainably. Performance cannot develop through comfort alone, but continually increasing demands without considering human capacity is not a sustainable performance strategy.
Stretch creates opportunities to learn, adapt, take responsibility and extend capability. Care recognises that performance is produced by people whose energy and capacity change as they respond to those demands.
Within the Mentally Fit approach to human energy and sustainable performance, Stretch and Care provides an important connection between ambitious performance expectations and the human resources required to pursue them over time.
STRETCH CREATES MEANINGFUL CHALLENGE
Performance development requires challenge. Individuals and teams need opportunities to move beyond what is already familiar, respond to more demanding situations and develop new ways of performing.
Stretch can appear through increased responsibility, ambitious objectives, unfamiliar situations, difficult decisions or the need to collaborate and perform in more complex environments.
The purpose of stretch is not pressure for its own sake. Meaningful challenge creates opportunities for capability to develop through experience.
This connects with continuous improvement culture, where development becomes part of everyday performance rather than something reserved only for formal training.
CARE SUPPORTS THE CAPACITY TO ENGAGE
Challenge requires human resources. People need energy, attention and sufficient available capacity to engage effectively with demanding objectives.
Care recognises this human side of the performance equation. It does not mean removing standards, lowering expectations or protecting people from every difficult situation.
Instead, it recognises that the ability to respond to stretch is influenced by the capacity available to perform. Performance capacity distinguishes what people are capable of doing from the resources currently available to mobilise those capabilities.
Care therefore supports sustainable challenge by acknowledging the conditions in which people are being asked to perform.
STRETCH AND CARE ARE NOT OPPOSITES
Organisations can sometimes treat performance and care as competing priorities. One appears to represent demanding results, while the other appears to represent reducing those demands.
Stretch and Care provides a different perspective. Challenge and support can operate together within the same performance environment.
Without sufficient stretch, people may have fewer opportunities to develop capability and expand what they can contribute. Without sufficient care, repeated demands can consume the capacity required to continue engaging effectively with those challenges.
The relationship between the two is therefore dynamic. Sustainable performance requires both meaningful demands and attention to the human resources required to meet them.
STRETCH IS DIFFERENT FROM PERMANENT PRESSURE
Stretch and pressure can overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A meaningful challenge may create pressure because it asks more of an individual or team. Permanent pressure, however, does not automatically produce continued development.
Pressure, energy and performance explores how demanding conditions draw on available human resources.
When every objective becomes urgent and every period requires maximum effort, pressure can become the default operating environment rather than a response to specific performance demands.
Stretch is more purposeful. It connects challenge with development and performance rather than assuming that greater intensity will always produce greater results.
STRETCH CAN DEVELOP PERFORMANCE CAPACITY
Appropriate challenge creates opportunities for people to use existing capabilities in new situations and develop additional capability through experience.
Stretch can therefore contribute to the longer-term development of performance. Individuals learn what they can do, where they need to adapt and which capabilities require further development.
Reflection for performance strengthens this relationship by helping people turn challenging experiences into learning. Experience alone does not guarantee development; reflection helps extract useful learning from what occurred.
Over time, the combination of challenge, experience and reflection can contribute to stronger performance capability.
CARE PROTECTS HUMAN ENERGY
Human energy is required to engage with challenge. Stretch therefore needs to be considered within the wider relationship between energy and human performance.
Care includes recognising that energy is finite. People can mobilise additional resources during important performance periods, but those resources cannot simply be assumed to remain permanently available.
This does not mean conserving energy by avoiding demanding work. It means using human capacity deliberately enough that challenge can contribute to performance rather than becoming uncontrolled expenditure.
The objective is to enable people to invest energy in meaningful stretch while maintaining the capacity required for continued performance.
LEADERSHIP BRINGS STRETCH AND CARE TO LIFE
Leaders influence both sides of the relationship. They establish expectations, assign responsibility, create challenge and influence how teams respond when demands increase.
Leadership energy explores how these behaviours affect the energy and capacity of others.
Stretch without sufficient clarity can create confusion rather than development. Care without meaningful expectations can reduce the challenge required for growth. Leadership helps connect ambitious objectives with appropriate direction, support and accountability.
The leadership task is therefore not simply to decide whether to stretch or care. It is to understand how both can contribute to effective and sustainable performance.
TRUST SUPPORTS MEANINGFUL STRETCH
Challenge often requires people to move beyond familiar ways of working. They may need to test ideas, acknowledge uncertainty, ask for help or discuss what did not work as expected.
This creates an important connection with trust and team performance and psychological safety.
Teams need sufficient trust to engage constructively with challenge. Psychological safety can help people raise concerns, contribute perspectives and discuss mistakes while continuing to operate within clear performance expectations.
Care therefore does not mean removing accountability. It helps create conditions in which people can engage honestly with demanding performance and the learning that comes from it.
ACCOUNTABILITY GIVES STRETCH PURPOSE
Stretch becomes more meaningful when people understand what they are expected to own and deliver. Challenge without clear responsibility can create activity without equivalent performance.
Ownership and accountability provide an important connection between personal commitment and explicit expectations around results.
Leaders can stretch people by expanding responsibility and creating opportunities to contribute at a higher level. Clear accountability then provides a framework for understanding what successful delivery requires.
This allows challenge to remain connected to real performance rather than becoming development for its own sake.
STRETCH REQUIRES RECOVERY
Meaningful stretch can require additional concentration, adaptation and effort. These demands use human resources, particularly during periods of intense performance.
The relationship between delivery and recovery becomes important here. People may need to mobilise strongly to meet a stretch objective, while recovery helps restore resources following that expenditure.
Energy recovery and sustainable performance develops this relationship further by positioning restoration as part of the performance system.
Care therefore extends beyond support during the challenge itself. It also recognises the recovery required after demanding performance.
STRETCH, CARE AND RESILIENCE
Challenge can contribute to resilience when people have opportunities to adapt, learn and recover from demanding experiences.
Resilience, recovery and performance explains why resilience should not be reduced to simply tolerating more pressure.
Stretch provides meaningful challenge. Care helps create conditions for people to engage with that challenge and recover afterwards. Reflection helps turn the experience into learning.
Together, these elements support a more sustainable form of resilience based on adaptation and renewed capacity rather than permanent endurance.
STRETCH AND CARE WITHIN TEAMS
Stretch and Care also operate collectively. Teams need ambitious objectives and opportunities to extend what they can achieve together, while the quality of the team environment influences how effectively they respond.
Team energy and performance considers how individual human resources become part of a collective performance system.
Leaders can stretch teams through demanding shared objectives while supporting them through clarity, appropriate collaboration and constructive performance conversations.
The goal is not to make every challenge comfortable. It is to create a team environment capable of engaging productively with challenge.
STRETCH AND CARE SUPPORT A SUSTAINABLE PERFORMANCE CULTURE
When Stretch and Care become part of everyday leadership behaviour, they can influence the wider organisational culture.
A sustainable performance culture needs ambition, accountability and demanding objectives. It also needs an understanding of the human capacity through which those objectives are pursued.
Stretch ensures that sustainability does not become an excuse for avoiding challenge. Care ensures that high performance does not become an excuse for treating human resources as unlimited.
Together, they help connect human development with the pursuit of sustainable high performance.
STRETCH AND CARE ACROSS MENTALLY FIT
The relationship between challenge and support appears across the international Mentally Fit network, reinforcing its role within the wider sustainable performance methodology.
Mentally Fit France explores challenge, support and sustainable performance in France, connecting demanding performance with the conditions required to sustain it.
Mentally Fit Netherlands develops the principle directly through Stretch and Care in the Netherlands, while Mentally Fit Spain explores Stretching and Caring in Spain.
Mentally Fit United States provides a related perspective through stretch, recovery and growth in the United States, connecting challenge with recovery and continued development.
Together, these perspectives reinforce an important Mentally Fit performance principle: people and teams need to be challenged if they are to develop, but sustainable challenge recognises the human capacity required to respond. Stretch and Care connects ambitious performance with the conditions that help make that performance repeatable.
